বীভত্স বই। কলনের রাস্তার পর রাস্তা, দু দিকে একটিমাত্র বাড়ি নেই–ধ্বংসপ, ভগ্ন্যুপ। তার তলায় এখনও হাজার হাজার মড়া পচছে গলছে। শহর-জোড়া দুর্গন্ধ থেকে নিষ্কৃতির উপায় নেই। একরকম ক্ষুদে সবুজ পোকা এইসব হাজার-পচা লাশ থেকে জন্ম নিয়েছে এবং শহরময় এমনই ঘন স্তরে ছেয়ে আছে যেন মনে হয় লন্ডনের ধুয়াশা। হাত দিয়ে মুখের সামনে থেকে তাড়াতে গেলে মুখে লেগে গিয়ে পিছলে আঠার মতো চোখেমুখে সেঁটে যায়।

লড়াইয়ের শুরুতে কলনে বাস করত প্রায় আট লক্ষ লোক। তারা ক-হাজার বাড়ি, ভিলা ফ্ল্যাটে বাস করত তার হিসাব স্পেন্ডার দেননি। শুধু বলেছেন, মাত্র তিনশো খানা(!) তখনও বাসের উপযোগী। Actually there are a few habitable buildings left in Cologne, Three hundred in all (!)

এ শহর তথা গোটা দেশের আর আর শহর গড়ে তুলবে কে, কারা?

দুষ্ট হোক শিষ্ট হোক, যেসব নাৎসি একদা নরওয়ে থেকে ইটালি, অতলান্তিক থেকে ককেশাস পর্যন্ত অধিকার করেছিল তারা কৃতবিদ্য, করিল্কর্মা ও অভিজ্ঞ নির্মাণ-ধ্বংস উভয় কর্মেই সিদ্ধহস্ত। তাদের কিছু মারা গেছে, অধিকাংশ মিত্রশক্তির শিবিরে শিবিরে বন্দি, কিছু পলাতক, অনেকে আন্ডারগ্রাউন্ড।

হিটলারের বৈরীপক্ষের অধিকাংশ অন্যলোকে। হিটলার তার ব্যবস্থা করে গিয়েছিলেন। আডেনাওয়ার গোত্রের নির্মাণতৎপর নেতা অতিশয় বিরল–মুষ্টিমেয়।

আডেনাওয়ার ভগ্নস্তূপের মাঝখানে এসে দাঁড়ালেন। একদা চার্চিল যে রকম লন্ডনের ভাঙাচোরার মাঝখানে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন। যদিও সে বিনাশ কলনের সহস্রাংশও ছিল না।

এখানে আমাকে একটি দীর্ঘ উদ্ধৃতি দিতে হবে। এটি পড়ে নিলে আডেনাওয়ারের চরিত্রগুণটি পাঠকের সামনে স্পষ্ট রেখায় ধরা দেবে। বিশেষত স্পেনডারের মতো লোক যখন এ ছবিটি এঁকেছেন।

দু দফে অনুবাদ করে লাভ নেই, এবং বিবেচনা করি এ প্রবন্ধের পাঠক অন্তত আমার চেয়ে ভালো ইংরেজি জানেন।

এটা যুদ্ধবিরতির দু তিন মাস পরের কথা। স্পেন্ডার বলেছেন :

Adenauer is a prominent Catholic in the Rheinland, who was Mayor of Cologne before Hitler came to power. It is now with a special personal emotion that he takes up the restoration of that Cologne which was a broken trayload of crokery when it was taken out of his hands. When he was last Lord Mayor he was in his fifties, he is now a man of seventy. He has an energetic, though some what insignificant appearance; a long lean oval face, almost no hair, small blue active eyes, a little button nose and a reddish complexion. He looks remarkably young and he has the quietly confident manner of a successful and attentive young man.

There are two aspects of reconstruction which we consider of equal importance, he said, one, the material rebuilding of the city. But just as important is the creation of a new spiritual life. You cant have failed to notice that the Nazis have laid German culture just as flat as the ruins of the Rheinland and the Ruhr. Fifteen years of Nazi rule have left Germany a spiritual desert, and perhaps it is more necessary to draw attention to this than to the physical ruins, for the spiritual devastation is not so apparent. There is hunger and thirst now for spiritual values in Germany. This is especially true of Cologne because here, in the past, we have had such a significant spiritual life and activity. Here it is possible today to do a great deal. Only the best should be our aim. We should have in Cologne the best education, the best books, the best newspapers, the best music.

The point Adenauer came back to again and again–his whole position rested on it was that the Germans were really starving spiritually, and that it was therefore of the utmost importance to give their minds and souls same food.

সে দুর্দিনে কি কেউ কল্পনা করতে পেরেছিল, দশ-বারো বছর যেতে না যেতেই তিনি কলন তথা সারা জর্মনিতে এমন সুখ-স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য, শিল্পোন্নতি, আত্মচর্চা ও ধর্মজীবনে নবজাগরণ এনে দেবেন, যে হিটলার তার গৌরবের মধ্যগগনেও সুদ্ধমাত্র সাংসারিক দিক দিয়েও এতখানি উন্নতি করতে পারেননি?

কেউ কল্পনা করতে পারবে না, এ তত্ত্বটা আডেনাওয়ার জানতেন বলেই স্পেন্ডারকে বিদায় নেবার বেলা তিনি দৃঢ়কণ্ঠে বলেন, The imagination has to be provided for.

কবিগুরুর কথা মনে পড়ে, স্বদেশী আন্দোলনের সময় ও পরবর্তী অসহযোগ আন্দোলনের সময় তিনি বারবার বলেছেন, আত্মার দিকটা অবহেলা করো না। অধিকাংশ রাজনীতিকরা তখন মুচকি হেসে বলতেন, আগে তো ইংরেজকে খেদাই।

ইংরেজ তো বহুকাল হল গেছে। তবে?

আসলে আমাদের imagination, চরিত্র, আত্মা দেউলে।
