কেউ কিছু বোঝার আগেই কানাই দ্রুত উঠে পড়েন, চকিত ক্ষিপ্রতায় পৌঁছে যান সাক্ষীর শূন্য কাঠগড়ায়। ঘরটা বিশেষ বড় নয়। সামান্যই দূরত্ব কাঠগড়া থেকে জজসাহেবের টেবিলের। সিলিং লক্ষ্য করে প্রথম গুলি… শব্দে সচকিত গার্লিক মুখ তুলতে না তুলতেই কানাই লাফ দিয়ে উঠলেন কাঠগড়ার রেলিংয়ের উপর। সেখান থেকে এক লাফে গার্লিকের টেবিলে, এর চেয়ে ঢের লম্বা লাফ সে হেসেখেলে দিয়ে থাকে ব্যায়ামের আখড়ায়। মাত্র কয়েক হাতের দূরত্ব থেকে সোজা গার্লিকের কপাল লক্ষ্য করে গুলি। কেউ কিছু বুঝে ওঠার আগেই। লক্ষ্যভেদ, এজলাসেই সম্পন্ন গার্লিক-নিধন।
সাদা পোশাকের পুলিশ গুলি চালাল অভাবিত ঘটনার ঘোর কাটিয়ে। লক্ষ্যভ্রষ্ট। কানাইয়ের পালটা গুলি লাগল পুলিশের কাঁধে। সার্জেন্ট ততক্ষণে ছুটে এসেছেন আওয়াজ পেয়ে। গুলি চালিয়েছেন কানাইকে লক্ষ্য করে। লাগল পেটে আর পায়ে। ভূপতিত কানাইয়ের শরীরে আরও কয়েক রাউন্ড গুলিবর্ষণ অতঃপর। ততক্ষণে পটাশিয়াম সায়ানাইডের শিশির পুরোটাই গলায় ঢেলে দিয়েছেন বীর বিপ্লবী। এজলাসেই মৃত্যু।
আদালতে তুলকালাম তখন। প্রাণভয়ে লোকজন ছুটে বেরচ্ছে এজলাস থেকে। বহির্মুখী জনতার ঠেলাঠেলিতে উলটে পড়েছে চেয়ার-টেবিল-বেঞ্চ। কাগজপত্র লন্ডভন্ড। পাশের ঘর থেকে ফোন গিয়েছে লালবাজারে, সশস্ত্র বাহিনী প্রয়োজন। হাসপাতাল থেকে তলব করা হয়েছে অ্যাম্বুল্যান্স।
কোর্টের বাইরে ট্যাক্সিতে তখন ঠায় বসে সুনীল। ছটফট করছেন টেনশনে। কাজটা হল? কানাই ফিরছে না কেন এখনও? তখনও জানেন না, যাকে ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়ার কথা, সে এজলাসে পড়ে প্রাণহীন। লোকজনের ভীতসন্ত্রস্ত ছোটাছুটি দেখে এক আইনজীবীকে সুনীল জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, ‘কী হয়েছে?’
উত্তর এল ঝটিতি।
—Garlick shot dead. Assailant shot dead too!
সুনীল শুনলেন এবং কথা বাড়ালেন না। শান্ত ভঙ্গিতে নির্দেশ দিলেন চালককে।
—সিংজি… গাড়ি স্টার্ট করুন।

পুলিশের রিপোর্টে ঘটনার বিবরণ যেমনটা ছিল, তুলে দিলাম হুবহু।
On 27th July 1931 at 2 p. m., Mr. R. R. Garlick, I. C. S., Senior Sessions Judge, 24 parganas, was while sitting in Court, fatally shot through the head by a Bengali Youth.
The assassin, who was immediately shot down by the Sergeant on duty, committed suicide while lying wounded under the table, by swallowing cyanide of potassium from a phial which was found on the floor. The Police Surgeon, who held the postmortem examination, was of opinion that death was due to hydro-cyanic acid poisoning. A bullet of .450 bore, which was extracted from the body, was evidently that fired from the revolver of the Sergeant. In the left hip pocket of the deceased was found a slip of paper with a bullet hole through it, on which was written ‘Bande Mataram; Cursed be your Court, whose injustice condemned Dinesh Gupta to execution. Receive the reward for it. – Bimal Gupta’; while in the other pocket were found 14 live revolver cartridges of .380 bore.
The revolver which was found in the possession of the assailant is a 6-chambered .380 bore, with fall out cylinder, marked ‘Jupitre’ with trade mark ‘E.C.’ and bearing the number 15621 on heel of butt and also the word ‘Eiber.’ It bears Spanish proof mark and the cylinder rotates from right to left. The four live cartridges in the revolver and the fourteen live cartridges found in the coat pocket of the assassin bear the base mark ‘S. & W. .38 Spl.’ and each charged with 16 grs. black power and weighing 140 grs.
The photograph of the deceased assassin was definitely identified by a deponent on 29th October 1932 as that of one Kanai Lal Bhattacharji, son of Nagendra Nath, of Majilpur police-station Joynagar. 24-Parganas.
Mr. Garlick was the President of the Special Tribunal which on 2nd February 1931 convicted and sentenced to death Dinesh Ch. Gupta for the murder of Lt. Col. N. Simpson, I M S Inspector-General of Prisons, Bengal, at Writers’ Buildings, Calcutta, on 8th December 1930.

লালবাজারের কর্তারা ছুটে এলেন, মৃত কানাইয়ের পকেট থেকে উদ্ধার হল সেই চিরকুট… ‘ধ্বংস হও…।’ কে এই বিমল গুপ্ত? পেডি-হত্যার ফেরারি আসামি বিমল দাশগুপ্ত? বিমলের আত্মীয়স্বজনদের খবর দিল পুলিশ। জানা গেল অচিরেই, আততায়ী বিমল নন। তবে কে?
‘কে’, জানতে চেষ্টার কসুর করেনি লালবাজার। ব্যর্থ হয়ে বিজ্ঞাপন দিতে হয়েছিল কাগজে, ‘A reward is hereby declared, worth Rupees Five Hundred to be given to one who can identify the murderer of Mr. Garlick.’
