রলাঁর বোন কিন্তু ইংরিজিতে চিঠি লিখলেন, আর সব চেয়ে আশ্চর্য, সুদূর বিদেশে থেকেও বাঙলা ভাষা তিনি আয়ত্ত করবার চেষ্টা করছেন–শুধু পড়া নয়, লেখাও। তাঁর চিঠিটা দীনেশরঞ্জনের গল্পের বই মাটির নেশাকে অবলম্বন করে লেখা—কিন্তু, আসলে, বাঙলা সাহিত্যের প্রতি মমত্বপ্রেরিত। মূল চিঠিটাই তুলে দিচ্ছি :

Dear Mr. Dass,

I did not thank you sooner for the books you sent to my brother and to me with such kind massages inscribed on them, because–as I wrote to Dr. Nag last month, I wanted to peruse at least part of their contents before acknowledging your gift.

In spite of my limited knowledge of your language I was able to understand and enjoy fully the stories I read in your মাটির নেশা. Of course I may have missed many a nice shade and I do not pretend to judge the literary merit of the style! But I can appreciate the substance of them. And পার্ব্বতীর piety and motherly love for the foundling. the poor cobbler দুলাল’s misfortunes in the city, the domestic scenes in the story কমল মধু awoke in my a twofold interest: making me once more aware of the oneness of human nature and setting up before my western eyes a vivid picture of Eastern customs of every day life.

I thank you too for Gokulchandra Nag’s works. I was deeply moved by মাধুরী. But I shall write later on to his brother about it.

I want also to tell you in my brother’s name and my own, how much we appreciate the gallant effort of কল্লোল. My wish is to grow more able to follow closely what it publishes (I am still a slave to my dictionary and plod on wasting much precious time) so that I may deserve at last a small part of the praise Dr. Nag gave me in the পৌষ number and of which I am quite unworthy.

চিঠিটার মধ্যে লক্ষিতব্য বিষয় হচ্ছে, বাংলা কথাগুলো ভাঙ-ভাঙা বাংলা হরফে লেখা।

তেমনি চিঠি লিখল জাসিন্তো বেনাভাতে, যোয়ান বোয়ার আর ফ্লুট ফামসুনের পক্ষে তার স্ত্রী। চিঠিগুলি অবিশ্যি মামুলি—সেটা বিষয় নয়, বিষয় হচ্ছে তাঁদের সৌজন্য, তাঁদের মিত্রতার স্বীকৃতি। সেই স্বীকৃতিতেই তারা মূল্যবান।
