ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে জন্ম আমার। অথচ এখানেই মুখ খোলা নিষেধ, আমাকে মুখ খুলতে হয় ইওরোপ আর আমেরিকায়। ওখানেই আমি আমার বিশ্বাসের কথা বলতে পারি। ওখানেই আজ্ঞা আলোচনা মত প্রকাশ। অবশ্য সব ধর্ম নিয়ে পশ্চিমের আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানগুলোতেও আজকাল নির্ভয়ে আর নির্বিঘ্নে নিজের মত প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব নয়।
বক্তৃতার সময় আমার নিরাপত্তার জন্য পুলিশ থাকে, হয় মঞ্চে, নয়তো মঞ্চের ঠিক নিচে। পৃথিবী ক্রমশ অনিরাপদ হয়ে উঠছে। অসহিষ্ণু মানুষ আজকাল পৃথিবীর এ প্রান্ত থেকে ও প্রান্ত বিচরণ করছে। শুধু একবারই আমি পশ্চিমের মেইনস্ট্রিম সোসাইটির বাইরের একটি অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দিয়েছিলাম, সেদিন মঞ্চ থেকে নেমে যেতে বাধ্য হয়েছিলাম আমি। আমেরিকার প্রবাসী বাঙালি হিন্দুরা প্রতি বছর বঙ্গ সম্মেলনের আয়োজন করে, সেই সম্মেলনের মঞ্চ থেকে। বঙ্গ সম্মেলনে আমার যাওয়ার কোনও ইচ্ছে ছিল না। কিন্তু আয়োজকদের অতি অনুরোধে রাজি হয়েছিলাম। আর যখন কি না আমেরিকার বিদেশ নীতির, বিশেষ করে যত্রতত্র যুদ্ধ বাধানোর নিন্দে করে কবিতা পড়ছিলাম, ম্যাডিসন স্কোয়ারের পনেরো হাজার বাঙালির মধ্যে একটি প্রভুভক্ত, যুদ্ধপ্রেমী অংশ হৈ চৈ করে আমাকে থামিয়ে দিল। হ্যাঁ, মুশকিল সেসব জায়গায় হয়ই, যেসব জায়গায় আমার একমাত্র পরিচয় ‘ইসলামবিরোধী’, এবং আমার ‘ইসলাম বিরোধিতা’র গল্পই তারা চায় শুনতে। কিন্তু যদি জানে যে আমি আসলে আরও অনেক কিছুর বিরোধী, মুসলমানরা যে যুদ্ধে মরছে, সেই যুদ্ধেরও বিরোধী, তখনই শুনি দূর হ, দুর হআওয়াজ। যখনই পৃথিবীকে সুন্দর করার স্বপ্ন নিয়ে মানবতার বিরুদ্ধে ঘটতে থাকা সব কিছুরই সমালোচনা করছি, তখনই ক্ষুদ্র মানুষের সঙ্গে সংঘাত ঘটে। ক্ষুদ্র মানুষের ভিড় থেকে দূরে সরি, সরতে সরতে বুঝি আমি একঘরে, আমি আলাদা, আমি একা, আমাকে আঙুল তুলে দেখাচ্ছে অন্যরা। বড় মানুষ আছে পৃথিবীতে তবে তাদের সঙ্গে হয় আমার দেখা হয় না, অথবা দেখা হয়, তবে খুব কম হয়।

India’s main political parties could not care less about Nasreen or her writ ing beyond how their parties’ reactions to events play to voters. Not wanting to offend the Muslim vote bank, neither Congress nor CPM has officially support ed an extension of Nasreen’s visa. Both parties want the situation to go away. The BJP will ensure that will not happen by raising the issue in Parliament to bat ter both the CPM and Congress and to burnish their own tarnished secular cre dentials. The BJP has seized the high ground and will milk the controversy for all its worth. For Taslima, the last week has been chaotic, but will no doubt provide ample material for her next book. As for the CPM, the public are increasingly aware that their lofty rhetoric about looking out for the little guy rings hollow, since they have stooped recently not only to kill peasants at Nandigram but to abandon a female author in order to pander to vote banks. Surely they could have found space for one woman in a teeming city of 16 million? MULFORD.

(SBU) Comment: Even though few in the Indian Muslim community are familiar with Nasreen’s work, there is a general sense amongst the Indian Mus lims community that her writings have somehow insulted or disparaged Islam. The Muslim groups’ public opposition is a reflection of this unhappiness with Nasreen. There are also politics at play. The Communist Party of India Marx ist (CPM) had originally driven Nasreen out of Kolkata to divert attention from the CPM’s central role in the Nandigram violence, as well as to win favor from Muslims who were the main victims of the Nandigram brutality (ref E). The Muslim groups have put pressure once again on the UPA government to act more decisively on Nasreen. Vote bank politics has been an important factor in the Nasreen controversy. India’s political parties are ready to use any tar get of opportunity available to pander to voting groups in preparation for the next national election, due before May 2009. The UPA’s hot-cold response in the Nasreen affair illustrates that the Congress Party, the original and still most prolific practitioner of vote bank pandering, is attempting to juggle its national image and the Muslim vote.
