But you cannot have it both ways. At least, religious theorists and apologists should not be allowed to get away with having it both ways. ৪২ প্রার্থনা তো কোন কাজে আসেই না, হার্ভার্ড এবং মায়ো ক্লিনিকের তত্বাবধানে পরিচালিত স্টেপ স্টাডি থেকে প্রাপ্ত ফলাফলে দেখা গেছে, কোন কোন ক্ষেত্রে প্রার্থনা বরং মানসিক উদ্বেগ বড়িয়ে তোলে। সে পরীক্ষায় যাদের জন্য প্রার্থনা করা হয়েছে, দেখা গিয়েছিলো পরবর্তীতে তাদের অনেকেরই শারীরিক অবস্থার অবনমন ঘটেছে। এটা কেন হল গবেষকেরা হলফ করে বলতে পারেননি, তবে সম্ভাব্য ব্যাখ্যা হিসেবে তারা বলেছেন, যে সমস্ত রোগী জানতে পেরেছে যে তাদের জন্য প্রার্থনা করা হচ্ছে, তারা ভেবে নিয়েছে তাদের অবস্থা এতোটাই গুরুতর যে সঘবদ্ধ প্রার্থনার দরকার পড়ছে। ফলে তাদের মধ্যে উদ্বেগের পরিমাণ বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে, আর সেই সাথে ঘটেছে শারীরিক জটিলতা বৃদ্ধি’। তবে ‘নেগেটিভ’ ফলাফলের ব্যাপারটা যদি আমরা বাদও দেই এটা নিশ্চিত, প্রার্থনার কোন সুপ্রভাব নেই, অন্তত নিরপেক্ষ গবেষণায় তা পাওয়া যায়নি।
