YUSUFALI: Then We changed their suffering into prosperity, until they grew and multiplied, and began to say: “Our fathers (too) were touched by suffering and affluence” … Behold! We called them to account of a sudden, while they realised not (their peril).
PICKTHAL: Then changed We the evil plight for good till they grew affluent and said: Tribulation and distress did touch our fathers. Then We seized them unawares, when they perceived not.
SHAKIR: Then We gave them good in the place of evil until they became many and said: Distress and happiness did indeed befall our fathers. Then We took them by surprise while they did not perceive.
KHALIFA: Then we substituted peace and prosperity in place of that hardship. But alas, they turned heedless and said, “It was our parents who experienced that hardship before prosperity.” Consequently, we punished them suddenly when they least expected.
আয়াতঃ 007.096
আর যদি সে জনপদের অধিবাসীরা ঈমান আনত এবং পরহেযগারী অবলম্বন করত, তবে আমি তাদের প্রতি আসমানী ও পার্থিব নেয়ামত সমূহ উম্মুক্ত করে দিতাম। কিন্তু তারা মিথ্যা প্রতিপন্ন করেছে। সুতরাং আমি তাদেরকে পাকড়াও করেছি তাদের কৃতকর্মের বদলাতে।
And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwâ (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes, etc.).
وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ الْقُرَى آمَنُواْ وَاتَّقَواْ لَفَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَرَكَاتٍ مِّنَ السَّمَاء وَالأَرْضِ وَلَـكِن كَذَّبُواْ فَأَخَذْنَاهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْسِبُونَ
Walaw anna ahla alqura amanoo waittaqaw lafatahna AAalayhim barakatin mina alssama-i waal-ardi walakin kaththaboo faakhathnahum bima kanoo yaksiboona
YUSUFALI: If the people of the towns had but believed and feared Allah, We should indeed have opened out to them (All kinds of) blessings from heaven and earth; but they rejected (the truth), and We brought them to book for their misdeeds.
PICKTHAL: And if the people of the townships had believed and kept from evil, surely We should have opened for them blessings from the sky and from the earth. But (unto every messenger) they gave the lie, and so We seized them on account of what they used to earn.
SHAKIR: And if the people of the towns had believed and guarded (against evil) We would certainly have opened up for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they rejected, so We overtook them for what they had earned.
KHALIFA: Had the people of those communities believed and turned righteous, we would have showered them with blessings from the heaven and the earth. Since they decided to disbelieve, we punished them for what they earned.
আয়াতঃ 007.097
এখনও কি এই জনপদের অধিবাসীরা এ ব্যাপারে নিশ্চিন্ত যে, আমার আযাব তাদের উপর রাতের বেলায় এসে পড়বে অথচ তখন তারা থাকবে ঘুমে অচেতন।
Did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment by night while they are asleep?
أَفَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ الْقُرَى أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا بَيَاتاً وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ
Afaamina ahlu alqura an ya/tiyahum ba/suna bayatan wahum na-imoona
YUSUFALI: Did the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of Our wrath by night while they were asleep?
PICKTHAL: Are the people of the townships then secure from the coming of Our wrath upon them as a night-raid while they sleep?
SHAKIR: What! do the people of the towns then feel secure from Our punishment coming to them by night while they sleep?
KHALIFA: Did the people of the present communities guarantee that our retribution will not come to them in the night as they sleep?
আয়াতঃ 007.098
আর এই জনপদের অধিবাসীরা কি নিশ্চিন্ত হয়ে পড়েছে যে, তাদের উপর আমার আযাব দিনের বেলাতে এসে পড়বে অথচ তারা তখন থাকবে খেলা-ধুলায় মত্ত।
Or, did the people of the towns then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment in the forenoon while they play?
أَوَ أَمِنَ أَهْلُ الْقُرَى أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا ضُحًى وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ
